HMRC Investigates Jersey accounts after list is leaked
A list of over 4,000 people that are currently holding accounts in Jersey with HSBC that are worth over £650m has been leaked to HMRC. This list has been passed through to HMRC by a whistle blower, and HMRC have confirmed they will be investigating. It has been reported that over half the people on the list are UK taxpayers.
HSBC have responded with the following statement “We are investigating the reports of an alleged loss of certain client data in Jersey as a matter of urgency. “We have not been notified of any investigation in relation to this matter by HMRC or any other authority but, should we receive notification, we will cooperate fully with the authorities.”
This incident has harrowing similarities to the 2008 stolen list of Swiss account holders that HMRC reputedly bought.
These two cases demonstrate the following simple truth – People don’t like to pay tax.
