I decided to take Gordon’s advice and not shortcut to the end of the book just to download his “Profit Plan on a Page”. I am glad I listened to his advice because the pages in between hit me with the hard questions I needed to answer about my business. After reading this book I feel that I can now move from what D’Silva calls the “squishy middle” to the top 10-20% in my industry.
The graphs, charts and diagrams that D’Silvia uses are very helpful with a visual representation of what he explains in words. He even gives away a workbook and links to an online workshop inside the book which I found to be very valuable.
My favorite quote from the book was “The last thing we need, as business owners, is more paperwork, more tasks, and more confusion.” This is so true and I was hoping I could walk away from this book with something simple I could implement. D’Silva’s Profit Plan on a Page (PPP) was exactly what I needed to help me stay focused on the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of my business. It was simple and just one page and I knew that could immediately implement it into my business. This book helped me realize that I was getting stuck “in my business” and not working on the ideas that would build my business to the next level.
At the end of the book D’Silvia brings up what most would consider a a worn out saying, “we all have 24 hrs in the day”, but it seemed to resinate with me this time. He asked, “How will you spend that time?” My answer was clear after reading this book. Why would it be so clear if this is something I have heard so many times before? D’Silvia really helped me reflect this time. He really made me think about my business and where I want it to be in the next 3-4 years.
This quote, “Only start with two or three projects,” helped me realize that I needed to scale down the different projects our business is doing now and focus on only three projects. I am going to follow Gordon’s advice and focus on breaking things down into smaller tasks, and get help one the tasks I struggle with. Lastly, find mentors and coaches to help you stay focused and accountable to your goals. Thanks Gordon for writing this book and helping me finally understand what I need to do in order to propel my profits to the next level!
The author, Gordon D’Silva, has lived this book. I felt so emotional reading parts of this work because D’Silva knows EXACTLY how I have felt as a small business owner! Most importantly he brings solutions to us. By focusing on those things we prefer to ignore, he proposes setting a new course away from mediocrity or failure and toward success. He says that we spend so much time in the quicksand of being self employed that our dreams are crashed. And we forget about our dreams. This is where the book finds me!
D’Silva spreads hope; loosely quoting a Chinese proverb by saying there are two ideal times to plant an apple tree…The first is 20 years ago and if you miss that opportunity, the second is now. He reminds us that simple things are not easy. And that making changes takes more than reading a book. He says that it takes regular new habit creation. He urges stuck business owners to believe they can make the needed changes, saying so long as you have a glimmer of hope or a thread of faith that turning your business around is possible for you, no matter how old you are.
D’Silva provides tools and exercises for examination of our business and invites anyone interested in finding a mastermind group to consider his. He also defines assets as things we have in our businesses such as skills, testimonial files, website, contacts and client lists, reminding us that our business does have value, even though we may not think of it this way. He even has a different approach to written goals, explaining why we have a tendency to think goal setting is a waste of time. D’Silva explains that goals alone are often not applied properly. Goals need to be one piece of an integrated whole puzzle. This book is uplifting and practical. A life line to a struggling business owner.
